Actriz y cantante estadounidense nacida en Alemania. Participó en la compañía teatral de Max Reinhardt en 1922; posteriormente actuó en películas alemanas y se convirtió en una estrella internacional al interpretar a la destructiva cantante de cabaré Lola-Lola en El Ángel azul (1930) de Josef von Sternberg. Sternberg la introdujo en Hollywood, donde juntos hicieron varios filmes, como Marruecos (1930), El expreso de Shanghai (1932) y Capricho imperial (1934), que impusieron su aura de sofisticación glamorosa y sensualidad lánguida. Durante la segunda guerra mundial realizó más de 500 presentaciones para animar a las tropas aliadas. Además protagonizó largometrajes como Arizona (1939), Berlín Occidental (1948), Testigo de cargo (1957) y Sed de mal (1958). Realizó largas giras por clubes nocturnos en la década de 1960 interpretando canciones de su sello como "Falling in Love Again.
